Teddy Bear Clinic

The Beacon Institute’s Teddy Bear Clinic is a free educational workshop for children. This clinic serves two purposes: to help children become more comfortable with visiting medical facilities and teach children about how to describe their illness or injury symptoms to their parents and medical professionals. We often partner with local medical students and professionals to help us facilitate this educational experience in order to provide a meaningful and medically accurate experience.

During our Teddy Bear Clinic, children get the opportunity to:

  • dress up like doctors / nurses
  • receive a new teddy bear to take through the clinic, the teddy is theirs to keep
  • learn about describing symptoms of illnesses or injuries
  • measure their height, weight, and temperature
  • perform an “x-ray” of their teddy bear
  • learn about types of treatments for common symptoms/illnesses (applying a cast, wrapping a bandage, administering a vaccine, etc.)
  • learn advice on how to approach getting a “shot” since it is the #1 fear of children that visit a doctor
